A main power transformer in a substation performs the primary voltage conversion between transmission and distribution levels. It steps high voltage down to medium or low voltage for feeders, or steps up from generator or local sources into the transmission grid. It also provides galvanic isolation between network sections, limits short circuit currents through its impedance, and supports voltage control via tap changing. Its performance directly affects losses, power quality, fault levels and overall reliability of the substation.
