A current transformer (CT) scales large line currents down to small, manageable values for metering and protection relays. It maintains a precise ratio and phase relationship within specified accuracy classes. CTs allow safe connection of instruments without exposing them to high primary currents. In protection applications, CT performance during faults is critical, as relays rely on accurate current reproduction to trip breakers correctly and isolate faults in the power system.
