Emulsion bitumen is a mixture of bitumen and water stabilized with an emulsifying agent, while standard bitumen is a viscous, semi-solid form of petroleum. The primary difference lies in their physical states and application temperatures. Emulsion bitumen is liquid at ambient temperatures, making it easier and safer to handle without the need for heating. Standard bitumen requires heating to become workable, which consumes more energy and poses safety risks. Emulsion bitumen is suitable for cold applications like surface treatments and cold mixes, whereas standard bitumen is typically used in hot mix asphalt.
