La prueba de voltaje de ruptura en aceite de transformador se realiza colocando una muestra de aceite entre dos electrodos y aplicando un voltaje creciente hasta que ocurre la ruptura dieléctrica. El voltaje al que se produce la ruptura se registra como el valor de voltaje de ruptura del aceite. Esta prueba permite evaluar la capacidad aislante del aceite y su capacidad para seguir protegiendo al transformador de fallas eléctricas.
