La medición de voltaje de ruptura en aceite se realiza extrayendo una muestra de aceite del transformador, colocándola en la célula de prueba del equipo BDV, y aplicando un voltaje creciente hasta que ocurre la ruptura. El voltaje en el que se produce la ruptura se registra y se compara con los estándares. Un valor bajo de BDV sugiere que el aceite está contaminado o degradado, lo que podría reducir su efectividad como aislante.
