Wastewater from hospitals can contain traces of anything from viruses and multi-resistant bacteria to medical contrast agents and chemicals for cancer treatment. Small amounts of hormone-disrupting substances and other medicine residues are also part of the mix that passes from patients through hospital toilets and into public sewer systems.

The health-care facilities should operate their own wastewater treatment equipment to ensure discharging into municipal sewage system only non-hazardous, fully disinfected wastewater.

Typically, wastewater treatment involves three stages:
– (I) Solids removal;
– (II) converting of dissolved biological matter into a solid mass using indigenous waterborne bacteria;
-(III) disinfection.

The third stage removes any residual suspended solids and other materials which were not removed in the previous stages. The effectiveness depends on the quality of the water being treated. The major objective of disinfection is to reduce the number of microorganisms in the waste water to be disposed of in the natural environment.

Common methods of disinfection like electrolysis, chlorination, germicidal rays are outdated or require highly skilled operators and investment costs. And for all that, considering that hospitals are overloaded, the current system requires qualitative changes.
