Pharmaceutical emulsions are key constituents in producing a wide range of medicinal products, such as creams, ointments, gels, oral suspensions, injectable solutions, and even cosmetics. The effectiveness and safety of these products largely depend on the level of emulsion homogeneity, because it ensures uniform distribution of active ingredients. For example, skin care creams shall have a uniform effect over the entire surface, and injectable solutions shall be completely stable to ensure accurate dosing.
Limitations of Standard Dispersers and Homogenizers
These days, standard dispersers and homogenizers are mostly used to produce pharmaceutical emulsions. They operate on the principle of mechanical grinding and mixing, but have a number of significant disadvantages. First, such devices cannot always ensure sufficiently fine grinding of particles, which results in uneven structure of the finished product. Second, the process is often accompanied by excessive heating, which may adversely affect the temperature-sensitive ingredients of pharmaceutical products, reducing their effectiveness. Furthermore, considerable power consumption and long processing times increase the cost of production.
GlobeCore CLM Colloid Mills for Pharmaceutical Emulsions
Based on this, GlobeCore has developed a technology for production of pharmaceutical emulsions by means of CLM colloid mills. GlobeCore’s model range of colloid mills includes both laboratory models for analyses with a capacity of 25 liters per hour and industrial models with a capacity of up to 25 cubic meters per hour.
CLM colloid mills operate on the principle of high-speed grinding. The process takes place in the gap between a rotor and a stator. Hydrodynamic forces grind particles to microsize, ensuring their uniform distribution throughout the volume of liquid, which allows for production of highly stable emulsions. The heat removal system helps preserving the active ingredients of pharmaceutical emulsions in their initial state. This is particularly important for the medicinal products which are sensitive to temperature changes, because their therapeutic properties remain unchanged.
Advantages of Using GlobeCore Colloid Mills
The use of GlobeCore colloid mills in the production of pharmaceutical emulsions offers a number of advantages, including:
- High effectiveness: CLM colloid mills allow grinding the particles to microsize, which considerably improves the homogeneity of emulsions. This ensures more effective absorption and action of pharmaceuticals.
- Maintained quality of products: owing to an efficient heat removal system, colloid mills do not affect temperature-sensitive ingredients, which is particularly important for pharmaceutical and cosmetic products.
- Versatility: CLM mills are suitable for processing of various materials, ensuring the versatility in applications ranging from creams to liquid suspensions.
