PCB oil, containing polychlorinated biphenyls, was once commonly used in transformers due to its excellent insulating properties. However, due to its toxicity and environmental hazards, the use of PCB oil has been banned or heavily restricted in many countries. Existing transformers with PCB oil are being phased out or replaced with safer alternatives.
