Pole-mounted distribution transformers are typically installed at a height of roughly 5 to 9 meters (16 to 30 feet) above ground level. The clearance depends on national electrical codes, voltage class, conductor sag, and safety requirements for pedestrian and vehicle traffic. The elevated position provides electrical insulation from the public and protects the transformer from accidental mechanical contact. Utilities may increase height in areas with higher trucks or agricultural equipment.
