Tan delta (dissipation factor) test evaluates dielectric health of windings, bushings, and insulation oil. It measures how much energy is lost as heat due to dielectric imperfections. High tan ? indicates moisture, aging, contamination, or partial discharge activity. Utilities rely on trend analysis and comparison with IEEE/IEC limits during maintenance and commissioning.
