Transformer power rating is defined by its apparent power capability at rated voltage, current, frequency, and cooling conditions. Because a transformer transfers AC energy with reactive components, kVA is used instead of kW to avoid dependence on load power factor. Ratings include thermal considerations such as insulation class, temperature rise, and cooling mode.
