Insulating oil in x-ray tubes ages due to several factors, including exposure to heat, oxygen, moisture, and electrical stress. Over time, these factors cause the oil to oxidize, leading to the formation of acids, sludge, and other contaminants that reduce its insulating and cooling properties. As the oil ages, its dielectric strength decreases, increasing the risk of electrical breakdowns.
