An insulation power factor test indicates dielectric quality and loss characteristics of oil-paper insulation, bushings, and windings. Elevated power factor reflects moisture ingress, contamination, thermal aging, or partial discharge precursors. Utilities trend results over time to decide when oil processing, drying, or refurbishment is needed. A low and stable value indicates healthy insulation and acceptable dielectric margins for service.
