Inside, a power transformer contains a laminated steel core, copper or aluminum windings, insulation barriers, spacers, and oil ducts for cooling. During inspection, technicians may view winding stacks, core clamping hardware, tap changer assemblies, and lead terminations. Clean oil, tight mechanical bracing, and intact insulation structures indicate healthy condition; discoloration or deformation suggests overheating or aging.
